Common Questions
Do I need a referral?
Not for a second opinion consultation. Most insurance plans cover spine specialist visits without a referral, but it is worth checking your specific plan if cost is a concern.
What records should I bring?
The most useful items are: your most recent MRI (the actual images on disc or shared link, not just the report), any X-rays or CT scans, the surgical recommendation you received in writing if available, and a brief medication list.
Can I do this over video?
Yes. Telemedicine consultations are available for NJ and select neighboring states. After we receive your imaging, a video visit works well for reviewing the films together and discussing options. A complex case may still benefit from an in-person exam.
What if Dr. Kwan agrees with the recommended surgery?
That is a useful outcome — you can move forward with the original plan knowing it has been independently confirmed. If Dr. Kwan recommends a different approach, we will outline why and what the alternatives are.
What does it cost?
For Medicare, No-Fault/PIP, and Workers' Compensation patients, we are in-network. For commercial insurance, we are out-of-network and provide a superbill so you can submit for partial reimbursement. We will discuss expected costs before your visit so there are no surprises.
