Academic Career
After earning his medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and completing his residency in neurological surgery at Northwell Health, Dr. Kwan went on to complete a prestigious fellowship in spine surgery at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University. During this advanced training, he focused on the operative management of complex spinal deformities and advanced spine conditions. Dr. Kwan is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, reflecting the highest standards of training, expertise, and clinical excellence in neurosurgery.
Building on his comprehensive training in both neurological and orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Kwan brings a high level of expertise to the evaluation and management of complex spinal conditions. This includes the assessment and, when appropriate, treatment of disorders of spinal alignment such as scoliosis and sagittal imbalance.
Dr. Kwan has demonstrated leadership in the advancement of spinal surgery techniques and has published on the use of surgical navigation and minimally invasive approaches. He routinely incorporates advanced minimally invasive methods, including tubular retractor–based techniques, for cervical and lumbar procedures such as microdiscectomy and spinal fusion, with the goal of minimizing tissue disruption and optimizing patient recovery.
Dr. Kwan has specialized expertise in cervical artificial disc replacement and employs advanced visualization technologies, including the operating microscope and exoscope, to enhance surgical precision and safety. He also maintains close collaborative relationships with spine surgeons across major spine centers throughout the tri-state region, supporting a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
